    First let me say, I am so glad you are enjoying Hemingway. He is "rad" as you wrote. In fact, he is beyond "rad" :) It seems your question is still just getting into understanding the civil war that took place. I also don't think that Hemingway's text will offer you much insight into that question. Perhaps you might want to think about how an American author depicted a Spanish civil war. Was he accurate? Was he biased? Was he able to understand and capture the very meaning behind the war? Or was his description a romanticized celebration of war in general? As you investigate the history, you will definitely want to consider how accurately the outsider can understand what is happening.
